MD 035: TEGH – DOWNFALL

Tegh alias Shahin Entezami is an Iranian sound artist from Tehran, a modern city in the north of Iran with a population of about 16 million people in the whole area. Tehran is also the home of a very interesting and very active scene around electronic and ambient music. The scene is so active, that the involved people founded an organization called SET, bringing all kinds of artists and fans together to celebrate experimental music. You might know one of the more famous artists and curators Siavash Amini, so it´s time to introduce you to one more chief character: Shahin Entezami under his moniker Tegh.

Tegh already released a digital album via Inner Ocean Records and contributed some tracks to some great compilations including the awesome Futuresequence Compilations.

“Downfall” is a masterpiece, which caught our hearts and minds after listening to the first sounds. The album is divided into five tracks based on electronic sounds with a perfectly executed balance between noise and melodic elements. There is an approach to the sound that is comparable to that of Tim Hecker, but with a more melancholic expression. Tegh establishes his very own space in the world of noisy ambient music and leaves a trail that is worth to be followed.

Tegh started working on “Downfall” after he saw a photograph of a boy falling out of a flying airplane. It´s a true story published by the evening independent in the year 1970 after the amateur photographer John Gilpin was shooting airplanes and caught the image of a stowaway boy falling out of the wheel housing. A horrible way to leave life. It´s not imaginable what this little boy must have felt during the downfall. Tegh tried to catch his feelings about that by writing the five tracks of “Downfall”.

“Downfall” comes as a gatefold digisleeve with matt lamination in an edition of 180 copies. The album was mastered by Andreas Brinke ( [ B O L T ] / Birken). The artwork was made by Katharina Woltering by using photographs of Tissika.

MD 041: THE STAR PILLOW – INVISIBLE SUMMER

You may not be familiar with this act, but Paolo Monti alias The Star Pillow is celebrating his 10 years anniversary this year. Last year he released his highly acclaimed album “Above” via Time Released Sound, now he returns with “Invisible Summer” and it´s a pleasure for us to release his album in occasion of his anniversary.

“Invisible Summer” is a very introverted, intense and melancholic piece of guitar-ambient-drone-work with a core of three epic tracks from 15 to 26 minutes, dedicated to the summer months, which were recorded during a hot summer in north Italy, where Paolo Monti lives. Uncommon for an Italian, Monti prefers the colder weather instead of the sunny days and that´s what you can also hear in his music. “Invisible Summer” has a clear sound, which mostly reminds you of colder places instead of shiny warm Toscana. The Star Pillow builds up his own weather with his shimmering ambient sounds, building up slowly but steady walls of fragile guitardrones. Breathtaking and monumentally beautiful. The album ends with the supplemental track “the end is a beginning” that catches up the mood of the first three tracks and transforms it into a warm and concrete sound. A pretty contrast, which shows the polarity in the sound of The Star Pillow.

Similarly to the opposites of the warm summer and the winterly sounds of the album, the artwork comes up with an imagery that also shows up opposite worlds. On the one hand there is wild nature and on the other side there is civilization in a very strange but beautiful liaison.

Tracklist:

inconsistency of june (15:43)
while you’re sleeping in july (23:45)
under the thin ice of august (26:26)
the end is a beginning (9:11)

“Invisible Summer” comes as a gatefold digisleeve with matt lamination in an edition of 180 copies.

MD 037: AIDAN BAKER & KAREN WILLEMS – LANDLOS

Once again Aidan Baker joins forces with a drummer, this time with Karen Willems of Inwolves from Belgium. A very intense musical collaboration, with a massive Studio output, starting with this EP called “Landlos”.

“Landlos” features two 14minutes tracks that sputter sounds out the guitar and drumset in a way that you like to listen in a never ending loop. It´s freejazz, it´s ambient, it´s progressive-kraut-rock, it´s whatever you discover.

Baker & Willems create an aura of fragile sounds that cocoon a soundweb, forming out those two tracks. You have to listen carefully to get every aspect of the sound, there is so much room in this music to be filled by your imagination.

The tape comes in a naturally canvas pouch with brown and green stitches, all handmade. Brown tape, coloured square inlay card and download code.

This release is limited to 50 copies and will be exclusive available at the Moving Noises Festival 2017.

Update: All remaining copies are available here (selling from 07.02.2017 at 20:00 german time)

MD 039: SCATTERWOUND – 0.0

Some years ago Dirk Serries and N started to think about a collaboration after they toured together. And yes, that was also our idea, when we visited some shows where they played four alternating sets without a final fifth climax of playing together.

But there is this urban legend that says, that once there was this fifth set during a soundcheck. They also recorded this collaboration and forgot about it until they randomly listened to the tracks during a harddrive search for something else.

And that´s the point 0.0, the beginning of the confraternity. The start of the musical ritual between those two distinguished ambient and drone musicians.

“0.0” features two epic tracks, which of course sound like Dirk Serries and N but also not, because there is this certain mood, a special dynamic and energy without restraint.

Noisy guitars with floating soundscapes lumber through the speakers. Is it just Dirk Serries and N or are there also Dylan Carlson and Stephen O´Malley? No, this is Scatterwound.

“0.0” comes as black tape with a minimal square inlay, because: Minimal visuals, maximum sounds.

The pouch-sleeve is made of thick grey canvas, with black and white stitches. All handmade. Limited to 50 copies.

Only available at the Moving Noises Festival 2017.

Update: All remaining copies are available here (selling from 07.02.2017 at 20:00 german time)

MD 034: JANEK SPRACHTA – GROW

Janek Sprachta is a Berlin based multiinstrumentalist, known for his drum works in the band Siva., in which he and Nils Frahm were playing together. Three years ago Sprachta released his first solo album, mastered by his bandmade and friend Nils Frahm.

After some years of experience in making music Sprachta recorded his second soloalbum called “Grow”. A little masterpiece that merges sounds from ambient, modern classic, post-rock and electronic music into a 40minutes soundjourney. Sprachta plays drums, guitar, piano and some other instruments creating his very own one-man-orchestra of experimental sounds (except of some cello sounds, played by Rahel Pötsch). Starting from fragile and quiet piano movements and ending up in a massive loud post-rockish soundwall.

“Grow” is one of the most not-drone-at-all albums of the Midira roster, but its mood fits perfectly into the soundcosmos of the label. The album sounds the best with a good portion of bass and middle volume on your hi-fi system, so it will take you on a smooth and warm soundtrip full of surprises.

Janek Sprachta will premiere the live version of “Grow” at the Moving Noises Festival in Bochum on 04.02.2017.

“Grow” comes as a 12inch vinyl. All white vinyl with printed labels, housed in a handmade silkscreenprinted gray cardboard sleeve including a coloured inlay. Limited to 100 copies.

Release date 24.02.2017

MD 032: KLEEFSTRA | BAKKER | KLEEFSTRA – DIZE

After releasing the highly acclaimed album „Moarntiids” by Piiptsjilling, the Kleefstra Brothers return to Midira with “Dize”, this time by Kleefstra | Bakker | Kleefstra.

Anne Chris Bakker, Romke Kleefstra and Jan Kleefstra joined forces a while ago and started releasing limited collaboration albums. Their sound is a fragile construct build of guitar drones by Romke Kleefstra and Anne Chris Bakker crowned by the unmistakable voice of Jan Kleefstra. It´s the most simple sound structure in their oeuvre, but also the most effective.

Speaking of voice, once again we are happy to preserve a little piece of language history, because Jan brings up some spoken vocals in north Frisian from the Netherlands. A rare language that is almost dead and got spoken by a small group of “north people”. We also offer you the english translation on the inside of the CD package, but it´s just the translation of the words, find out foryourself if you get the meaning. It´s mysterious.

Dize is a dark piece of music, taking you to a journey through the cold seaside of the north. Sounds like waves and winds create an atmosphere that gives you the creeps and on the other side you get a feeling of being safe, surrounded by the warm voice of Jan Kleefstra. The guitar sounds start with a certain motive and than they transform into a big crawling beast of wall with a forcing bass sound and swelling heights.

A four tracks journey between ambient, drone and cinematic soundscapes. We recommend a cold day, with dimmed lights and a cup of tea or coffe for listening to this epic album. Maximum volume preconditioned.

“Dize” comes as a 4 panel digisleeve with matt finish, including the frysian lyrics and the english translation. Limited to 180 copies.

Release date 17.02.17
Preorder starts 09.01.17 (20:00 german time)

We also offer you a limited Preorder Bundle including the Piiptsjilling CD.

MD 025: AIDAN BAKER / N / DIRK SERRIES – ENOMENI

enomeni-artwork

Some years ago, when we (Cosima & Dimi) visited a live performance of Dirk Serries Microphonics, he asked us, if we ever will marry and we answered, that if we do, Dirk had to play a wedding concert for us. Back then, it was just a running joke. Well, finally we ended up with a wedding band consisting of our three favorite artists Dirk Serries, N and Aidan Baker.

Dirk Serries, Aidan Baker and N

“Enomeni” (which is greek and means “connected”) is a document of a very special live performance. Aidan Baker, N and Dirk Serries came together for the first time to play an improvised live session. The result is an one hour session, divided into four tracks, which show up an impressively increasing soundjourney with accentuating moments, ending up in a massive drone with squeaking and buzzing guitars.

The set starts very cautious and you can hear how the three musicians are coming together to build up an epic track, in which they find their perfect roles. Aidan Baker takes over the rhythm section by looping some sweeping sounds, N builds up a valley of ambient and drone sounds with hills, mountains and endless horizons and Dirk Serries rounds up everything by accompanying both or bringing in some accents like bowed guitar sounds.  Like mentioned before everything ends up in an encore which also could bring you in mind, that they were joined by members of Sunn o))) or Earth for a big drone finale.

Tracklist:
A – 17:38 – Ritual I
B – 17:04 – Ritual II
C – 10:14 – Ritual III
D – 13:50 – Ritual IV

enomeni

The set was mastered for vinyl by Fear Falls Burning (Dirk Serries), being divided into four tracks, each one hosted on one 12inch side. The artwork is made by N, using photos by Cosima made in Greece during the church wedding vacations.

enomeni vinyl

The record comes as a double vinyl in an edition of 250 copies, housed in a gatefold sleeve, printed inside out with an incredible hand feel. We have 150 copies on black vinyl and a limited edition of 100 coloured copies.

MD 029: [ B O L T ] + GROWTH – SPLIT TAPE

boltvsgrowth_inlay_front

With this release we want to bring you a collection of fine drone and ambient tracks from Germany. As you might already be familiar with the band on side A, side B maybe could be new to you. But lets start from the beginning.

Side A contains three new tracks by [ B O L T ], who are currently in the studio, recording their next full length album as a trio with Maik from Kodiak. That circumstance makes this release also very special, cause this might be the last [ B O L T ] output as a duo. The tracks evolve within 20 minutes playtime into massive soundwalls, build by two bass guitars. Compared to previous released material those tracks have a very homogeneous structure and surprisingly one track has also a real name, caused to it´s function. A drone tale, with quiet and loud parts that will embrace you.

bolt growth split tape

Side B features two tracks by Growth from Berlin. If you are familiar with not so ambient drone guitar music, you might know him as guitarist of Sun Worship. Growth concentrates on ambient and drone sounds made by guitar and has a big focus on floating sounds. This is what the Inverted Horizon tracks on side B are all about. Diving into a wave of ambient sounds and swimming through drones and noise, just to breach safely back to the shore.

Finding a fitting body for this music document, was a little bit challenging, but we finally came up with this: Clear transparent Tapes with black reels, black thick cardboard sleeves with die-cutted windows to give you a look at the artwork, which is printed on magic chrome cardboard, that makes the inlay card looks metallic.

The Tape is limited to 50 copies and comes with a download code.

Release date: 08.10.2016 (By the way, it´s Cassette Store Day)

MD 028: BIRKEN – MONSTERA

cover_front-neu

Birken might sound unfamiliar to you, but you might know the artist behind this name as Andreas from [ B O L T ]. Thomas from [ B O L T ] already released his solo material as ninemiles via Midira, so we are very happy that Birken also joined the family with his debut album “Monstera”.

Birken concentrates on guitar sounds, mostly in a way that you think someone added some synthesizer sounds, but that´s a false conclusion, everything is made by six strings and some soundeffects. As Andreas is also interested in old school recordings he captured all the tracks without overdubs, what makes the tracks predestined for a tape release.

The songs, all named after plants, are very experimental always moving between ambient and drone, but you also can capture a kind of recurrent melody, what makes the characteristic difference compared to other releases of the same genre. “Monstera” comes up with four tracks, mostly in an ambient mood, but morphing occasionally into different ways, which makes this album a must-listen.

Birken Tapes

Not enough that the album is a special soundjourney, Birken had a special artwork inspiration which ended up in an edition of 50 tapes with 50 different artworks. All cardboard sleeves have a unique silkscreen print of monstera leafs plus a second black silkscreen lettering print on it.

You can choose between the following options:

20 sage green tapes housed in yellow cardboard sleeves
20 neon yellow tapes housed in pink cardboard sleeves
10 neon pink tapes housed in green cardboard sleeves

The Tape is limited to 50 unique copies and comes with a full coloured inlay card and a download code.

MD 033: N (45) + [ B O L T ]

After their two unnamed full length albums known under the moniker of „dead rabbit“ and „dead squirrel” N + [ B O L T ] now return with their new unnamed Lathe Cut / CD EP which we lovingly call “dead mouse”.

n bolt

The record contains one track by N on side A and one by [ B O L T ] on side B. So, is it a split? Well, YES if you just listen to the lathe cut tracks and NO if you look at the whole concept:

N + [ B O L T ] recorded two blackmetallish drone tracks with the same length, intended to be played simultaneously. To experience the maximum listening pleasure, you have to listen to the lathe cut and to the CD at once and at this point it´s not a split but a surround sound collaboration.

For those of you, who do not have the chance to listen to both tracks simultaneously, we added a mix of both tracks as a bonus track on the CD. But trust us, it´s not the same experience.

IMG_6492

You can stream the mixed version right here:

And just to share our experience with this record, here are nine different ways to listen to it:

  • N “5.23” 33rpm lathe version
  • [ B O L T ] “5.23” 33rpm lathe version
  • N “5.23” 45rpm lathe version
  • [ B O L T ] “5.23” 45rpm lathe version
  • N “5.23” CD version
  • [ B O L T ] CD version
  • N + [ B O L T ] CD version
  • N + [ B O L T ] CD version + N lathe version
  • N + [ B O L T ] CD version + [ B O L T ] lathe version

There is no hint on the lathe cut about side A/B or 33/45 rpm. Experience it for yourself.

The record comes as a wonderful all ultra clear (no labels) 7inch lathe cut, limited to 30 copies, cutted by Peter King (NZ), housed in a heavy sleeve made of 400g chromoduplex grey/white cardboard, printed inside out and handfolded by the band. Additional to this, the package contains a full colour printed CD-R with the tracks in a different mastered version plus a mix of both tracks as a bonus track.

IMG_6494

Please note: Lathe cuts do not have the same sound like vinyl records and need to be cleaned carefully to get the best sound results. We cannot give you a guarantee that you will not hear any scratching noises. But that´s the fascinating thing about records made by cutting the music into a piece of plastic. Anyway, we love the sound of N + [ B O L T ] via a lathe cut record and the result sounds amazing.
